BASIC SCIENCE
BS110 General Biology (3 units)
This course will present Science of life or living matter in all its forms
and phenomena. The class gives Study of the origin, reproduction,
structure of plant and animal life and its physiological process. Human
organ systems and the function of human organs covered. The human
reproductive process and genetic phenomena are also touched.
BS120 General Chemistry (3 units)
This course will present the basic principles of inorganic and organic
chemistry, with emphasis on the periodic table of valence which
determines atomic-molecular interactions responsible for chemical
changes in organic compounds within living organisms.
BS130 General Physics (2 units)
Basic principles of general physics relevant to the study of
Acupuncture, including electric magnetism, heat and light.
BS140 General Psychology (2 units)
This course will present the history and development of psychological
theory and some aspects of human behavior science and pathologic
psychology which includes substance abuse.
BS211 Anatomy (4 units)
This course deals with structures of the human body with special
attention to the basic components of the body and their functions,
cardiovascular system, respiratory system, lymphatic system and
immune systems, nervous system, urinary system, digestive system.
BS221 Human Physiology (4 units)
This course deals with functions of the human body with special
attention to the normal functions of human organ, like cardiovascular
system, respiratory system, lymphatic system and immune systems,
nervous system, urinary system, digestive system, nervous system.
BS340 Nutrition and Vitamins (2 units)
This course is an introduction to the basic concepts of nutrition and
vitamins. The essential nutritional requirements and principles are
discussed. The basic concepts therapeutic diets, and clinical application
of nutritional science are also included.
ACUPUNCTURE AND ASIAN MEDICINE
AM311 Foundation of Asian Medicine I (3 units)
This course is a detailed introduction to the basic theories of Asian
medicine, and the association of these theories with their clinical
applications.
AM312 Foundation of Asian Medicine II (3 units)
This course gives a Brief history, basic principles and manipulation
techniques of Asian Massage. Asian Massage and Basic Principle
of Asian Massage therapy which deals with Yin, Yang, blood, and
internal organs briefly discussed. The course will be discussed
introducing diseases involving internal organs. And also gives
the special physical examination of vertebrae, hip joint and lower
extremities.
AM421 Asian Medicine Diagnosis I (3 units)
This course is an introduction of the four methods of diagnosis in Asian
medicine with emphasis on tongue observations and pulse diagnosis.
Also covered is an analysis of symptoms and signs of disease.
AM422 Asian Medicine Diagnosis II (3 units)
This course is an Advanced study of four methods of diagnosis in
Asian medicine with an emphasis on tongue observation and pulse
diagnosis. Also covered is an analysis of symptoms and signs of
disease.
AM431 AM Internal Medicine I (3 units)
This course is a study of clinical Asian medicine dealing with
syndromes of different body systems such as the respiratory,
gastrointestinal and urinary system. Also discussed in detail
is dermatology, ophthalmology, geriatrics, family medicine.
Consideration is given to etiopathology , clinical manifestations,
analysis, and treatment plan, including important herbal treatments
and basic formula. Also discussed in detail is how to add herbs to a
basic formula according to disease progress and different syndromes.
Acupuncture treatments are also mentioned.
AM432 AM Internal Medicine II (4 units)

and different states of disease progress.
AM434 Jin Gui Yao Lue (1 unit)
This course consists of the classic theories of diseases caused by
internal and external factors. It deals mainly with miscellaneous
diseases by internal medicine, and a part of surgical and women’s
diseases, in addition. There are 25 chapters, including 262
prescriptions.
AM435 Wen Bing Xue (1 unit)
This course consists of the classic theories of diseases caused
by exogenous wen yi factors. Included are the etiology, clinical
manifestations, pulse and tongue signs, and complications of different
states of each disease. The course also covers the basic therapeutic
herbal formulas according to differential diagnosis of each syndrome
and different stages of disease progress.
AM436 Nei Jing (1 unit)
This course is a discussion of classics of Chinese medicine in depth.
Covered are “Su Wen(plain questions)”, a wide range of subjects in
internal medicine, as well as “Ling Shu (spiritual axis)” which deals
with internal medicine in general and acupuncture in particular. Also
included are some subjects of Nan Jing Difficult Classic] which is an
exposition of the theory and philosophy of the Nei Jing.
AM533 Asian Medicine Gynecology (3 units)
This course introduce Asian Medicine gynecology that consists of basic
physiology of female menstruation according to Asian medical theory,
different disorders and diseases regarding menstruation cycles, various
changes of menstrual flow, and special symptoms accompanying the
menstrual cycles.
AM534 Asian Medicine Pediatrics (1 unit)
This course introduces Asian Medicine pediatrics that consists
of the study of the physiological features of children during their
growth and development and etio-pathological and pathological
features with a comparison to adult disease. Diagnosis and treatment
of some of the common pediatric diseases is included as well.
AM535 AM Traumatology (2 units)
This is a specialty of Asian Medicine to study the concept and principle
of trauma and orthopedics of Asian Medicine, the method of its
diagnosis and treatment as well as its advanced specialty. The history
of Asian traumatic and orthopedic medicine on bone fracture, joint
dislocation and trauma of soft tissue and organs.
AM536 External Medicine (1 unit)
This is a specialty of Asian Medicine to learn how to identify many
external disorders and some kinds of visceral organs and how to treat
them by Asian Medicine methods. The Asian medical principle on
the skin, various masses, anus, male organ, breasts, vessels and some
viscera diseases, their classification and special treatment by Asian
medicine including internal and external herbs and surgical techniques.
AM537 AM Philosophy (1 unit)
This course is an introduction to the Asian medicine and their historical
background with the philosophy.
HB401 Herbal Principles (1 unit)
This is an introduction to Asian herbal medicine. It is also a study of
the principles of herbs and the principles of herbal combinations. The
general natural property, tastes, and source of herbs are introduced. The
process of herbs and the basic knowledge of clinical use of herbs are
discussed.
HB402 Herbology I (4 units)
A systematic description of the commonly used herbs in terms of
their nature, entering channel (target organs), actions, indications,
contraindications, dosage and route of administration.
HB403 Herbology II (4 units)
A systematic description of the commonly used herbs in terms of
their nature, entering channel (target organs), actions, indications,
contraindications, dosage and route of administration.
HB404 Herboloby III (4 units)
A systematic description of the commonly used herbs in terms of
their nature, entering channel (target organs), actions, indications,
contraindications, dosage and route of administration.
HB411 Herbal Formula I (4 units)
An in-depth study of herbs and common formulas used in Asian
medicine practice, including a description of actions, indications,
contraindications, dosage, variation and route of administration of the
herbal formulas.
HB412 Herbal Formula II (4 units)
An in-depth study of herbs and common formulas used in Asian
medicine practice, including a description of actions, indications,
contraindications, dosage, variation and route of administration of the
herbal formulas.
HB413 Herbal Formula III (4 units)
An in-depth study of herbs and common formulas used in Asian
medicine practice, including a description of actions, indications,
contraindications, dosage, variation and route of administration of the
herbal formulas.
HB520 Western Medicine and Asian Medicine Nutrition (4 units)
This course gives general concepts of nutrition as a treatment modality
in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Differential diagnosis and symptom/
sign cAMplex reviewed for nutritional treatment of various diseases
with presentation of appropriate use of diet, herbal stews and soups.
Nutritional ergogenic aids, nutrition and cancer prevention and
nutritional issues in pediatrics will be emphasized along with trend
diets.
HB521 Herbal Lab Practice (3 units)
The samples of 264 individual herbs are prepared. The methods to
recognize individual herbs are introduced. A review of tastes and
properties, therapeutic meridian, functions, indications, dosage and
contraindications of 264 individual herbs. A review of the functions
and indications of 63 formulas.
AC 450 Meridian Theory (1 unit)
This course is an introduction to the basic concepts of the meridians
and collaterals and the acupoints. It gives also an outline of
the therapeutic properties of the points of the 14 meridians.
AC451 Acu point I (3 units)
This course is a detailed study of the pathway, pathogens, the
points location, functions, indications, puncturing methods,
anatomy and special precautions of contraindications of lung, large
intestine, stomach, spleen and heart meridian and small intestine.
AC452 Acu Point II (3 units)
This course includes the detailed discussion of the channel pathways,
pathogens, point location, functions, indications, anatomy and puncture
methods of urinary bladder, kidney, pericardium, Sanjiao, gall bladder,
liver meridians. Caution when puncturing into the certain points are
also included.
AC453 Acu Point III (3 units)
This course is a detailed study of the special acupoints and their
applications includes extra meridian, twelve divergent meridian, fifteen
collaterals, twelve muscular region and twelve cutaneous regions. The
differentiation of syndromes according to the theory of meridians and
collateral, the extraordinary points, acupuncture root and branch, origin
and end path of qi, mid day and mid night law are also included.
AC461 Acupuncture Techniques I (3 units)
This course gives various needling techniques as well as techniques
of moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, ear, hand and scalp needling are
introduced. Clean needle technique is emphasized. These courses also
include precautions and contraindication and management of possible
accidents in acupuncture treatment. Practice on how to locate and insert
the needles into all acupoints (regular acupoints and extra acupoints)
will be given.
AC462 Acupuncture Techniques II (3 units)
This course is a general discussion of other acupuncture techniques
(scalp acupunture, ear acupuncture, hand acupuncture, cutaneous
acupuncture, and electro acupuncture with ultra sound and magnets and
beads etc.). This course also covers actual and practical acupuncturing
skills in urinary bladder, kidney, pericardium, sanjiao, gall bladder,
liver channel and the ear and the head.
AC463 Acupuncture Techniques III (3 units)
This course includes a study of the principles of the acupuncture
prescription and treatment plan and a detailed study of the clinical
acupuncture treatment planning of different syndromes based on the
principles of acupuncture and the special function of the acupuncture
points.
AC471 Tui Na-Acupressure (2 units)
The study and practice of basic acupressure knowledge and techniques
and Tui-Na practice programs. The student is introduced to the field of
Acupressure, Tuina practice and enabled to implement this knowledge
into the practice of oriental medicine.
AC472 TaiChi & Qigong Chuan (2 units)
This course is the study and practice of Qigong and Taichi Chuan. The
student is introduced to the field of Qigong and Taichichuan exercise
and it enables them to implement this knowledge into the practice of
Asian Medicine.
WESTERN MEDICINE
WM350 History of Medicine (1 unit)
This course will present the history of medicine from the ancient
experience to modern experiments and observations.
WM360 Medical Terminology II(2 units)
This course deals with the basic terminology which is used in the
medical field. These are technically exact vocabulary used by
professionals to communicate properly to describe the patient and the
disease conditions. There are many abbreviations and prefixes and
suffixes.
BS331 Western Pathology (4 units)
The general pathology components deal with diseases at a cellular
level, inflammation and repair, genetic and metabolic diseases,
endocrine disorders, hematological disorders, neoplasia and its clinical
aspects and immuno-pathology. Also some aspects of gastro-intestinal
pathology will be dealt with in this class.
WM491 Western Medical Science I (4 units)
This course of clinical science includes a brief overview of the general
aspects of western medicine such as surgery, obstetrics, gynecology,
pediatrics and some aspects of preventive medicine. Frequently seen
clinical disorders of signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatments will
be discussed.
WM492 Western Medical Science II (3 units)
This course of clinical medicine includes the general aspects of
western parts of internal medicine. Frequently seen clinical disorders
of signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatments will be discussed.
WM493 Western Pharmacology (3 units)
The therapeutic approaches in western medicine. Drugs which are used
in the treatment of disease will be discussed in detail in the course.
The mechanisms of action, absorption and excretion and the toxicity of
specific drugs will be reviewed during the course.
WM 596 Physical Exam Lab Diagnosis I (4 units)
This course of western diagnosis includes a brief overview of the
general diagnostic aspects of western medicine. The process required
to get a proper diagnosis, such as history taking, physical examination,
brief lab studies of urine, blood, body fluids and radiological
studies(imaging) will be reviewed. Also Clinical reasoning and
problem solving, clinical impressions and the formation of a working
diagnosis, including acupuncture and Asian medicine diagnoses, and
the WHO’s international classification diseases will be dealt with in
this class.
PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT
PM 551 Case Management I (3 units)
This course covers primary care responsibilities, secondary and
specialty care responsibilities, psychological assessment, treatment
contraindications and complications, including drug and herb
interactions.
PM552 Case Management II (3 units)
This course covers treatment planning, continuity of care, referral,
collaboration, follow-up care, final review, functional outcome
measurements, prognosis, future medical care, medical-legal report
writing, expert medical testimony, and independent medical review,
and socialized medicine patients, including knowledge of workers
compensation/labor codes and procedures and qualified medical
evaluations, coding procedures for current procedural codes, including
CPT and ICD-9 diagnoses, special care/seriously ill patients and
emergency procedures.
PM561 Practice Management (2 units)
This course provides students with a detailed study of the basic
organization of the medical office and clinic with emphasis on
office management, patient record keeping, billing procedures, legal
responsibilities and related topics.
PM562 Ethics (1 units)
This course provides the student with lectures, readings and
discussions of ethics, jurisprudence and current issues that confront the
modern health care Asian practitioner with a focus on laws and ethics
for California licensed acupuncturists.
PM570 Public Health (2 units)
This course is to provide students the opportunity of learning the
art science of public and community health prevention and public
health education. Also to learn epidemiology, socioeconomic factors,
hygiene, the prevention and eradication of epidemic diseases,
approached in treating chemical dependency, and necessary skills to
respond to respond emergency situations and perform the appropriate
care until professional medical help arrives.
PM480 Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (0 unit)
This course is a certificate program for studying and practicing
emergency care. The program is instructed by a certified instructor
who was certified by American Red Cross or American Heart
Association.
PM580 Research Methodology (2 units)
This course provides students with introducing how to prepare a thesis.
The course designed to introduce basic concepts and techniques of
collecting, organizing and analyzing data and information in order to
carry out and research a specific inquiry in medical science.
CLINICAL PRACTICE & PROCEDURE
CL600 Clinic Procedure (1 unit)
This course is designed to introduce equipment maintenance and safety
with the regulations of the state and federal government.
CL601 Clinic I (Observer) (2 units)
This course is an orientation to the clinic for new interns. It guides
the students to observe the clinician for patient examination and
treatment in the clinic. Classroom sessions include discussions of basic
diagnostic protocol, traditional Chinese medical therapies, and the
patient-practitioner relationship.
CL602 Clinic II (Observer/Pre-Internship) (4 units)
This course is all aspects of clinic procedures including clean and
sanitary technique and protocol and the prevention of infection from
blood borne pathogens.
CL611 Clinic III (Pre-Internship) (6 units)
This course is the application of Eastern and Western diagnostic
procedures in evaluating patients. (Review of Asian Medical
theory, acupressure, herbology, Diagnosis, and their application
to case studies in preparation for observing clinic patients)
CL612 Clinic IV (Pre-Internship/Internship) (6 units)
This course is the application of Eastern and Western diagnostic procedures
in evaluating patients. (Review of Asian Medical theory, acupressure,
herbology, Diagnosis, and their application to case studies in preparation for
observing clinic patients)
CL613 Clinic V (Internship) (7 units)
In this internship course supervised practice will be performed. The
clinical treatment of a patient with a real acupuncturing under the
supervisor will be done. The supervisor shall be physically present at
the needling of the patient. The supervisor shall otherwise be in close
proximity to the location at which the patient is being treated during
the clinical practice. The student shall also consult with the supervisor
before and after each treatment.
CL614 Clinic VI (Internship) (7 units)
In this internship course supervised practice will be performed. The
clinical treatment of a patient with a real acupuncturing under the
supervisor will be done. The supervisor shall be physically present at
the needling of the patient. The supervisor shall otherwise be in close
proximity to the location at which the patient is being treated during
the clinical practice. The student shall also consult with the supervisor
before and after each treatment.
