Associate of Science in Nursing

NR100 Medical Terminology I (3 units)
This course is an introduction to recognize and understand basic medical terms. The course provides nursing students with an analysis of unfamiliar terms using the knowledge of word roots, suffixes and prefixes, and identification of abbreviation. In addition, it offers opportunities for application of medical terminology, further development of skill in analyzing components of medical terms, and learning medical vocabulary applicable to specialties of medicine.

NR101 Fundamentals of Nursing I (8.5 units)
This course is an introduction to nursing and instruction aimed to mastery of entry level nursing skills and competencies. Subjects include: Nursing history and trends; trans-cultural nursing, spiritual and cultural diversity; therapeutic communication; nurse-client relationships; the Nursing Process; data collection / assessment and basic charting; legal and ethical issues in nursing; admission, transfer and discharge of patients; safety and emergency issues; feeding and elimination; pain management; body mechanics infection prevention and control; medical / surgical asepsis and wound care.

NR102 Fundamentals of Nursing-Clinical (6 units)
This course is to provide opportunities to practice clinical experiences and professional nursing skills. Students practice clinical skills through the skills lab class and later are given opportunities to take care for patients in the clinical settings such as in nursing home, health care center, or hospital.

NR110 Anatomy & Physiology (3.5 units)
An introduction to the principles of human structure and function with emphasis on the interrelationships of the various systems and the human organisms as an integrated whole. The course also covers the function of microorganisms and their role in disease processes.

NR120 Pharmacology I (4 units)
An introductory course in the principles of pharmacology for vocational nursing. The course provides nursing students with a methodical approach for calculating medication dosages and administering drugs. Content includes general principles of pharmacology, legal, ethical, and safety aspects of medication administration.

NR103 Gerontological Nursing (1 unit)
This course builds on previous medical-surgical knowledge and skills in applying the nursing process focusing on the older adult living in the community. Also, this course emphasis the professional role of the nurse in assisting older adults in locating and utilizing appropriate community resources.

NR200 Medical-Surgical Nursing I (13 units)
This course is an introduction to Medical Surgical Nursing to introduce nursing student to concepts and practices as they related to the adult patient in the Medical Surgical environment. The Medical/Surgical component of the Vocational Nurse Education is designed to provide theoretical knowledge of the body systems and the disease states that afflict each one. In addition, The implementation of the nursing process will be emphasized throughout the Medical/Surgical component and, students will begin to recognize alterations in functioning or illness and formulate age-appropriate nursing interventions through utilization of the nursing process.

NR210 Medical-Surgical Nursing I – Clinical (8.5 units)
This course is to provide nursing skills, to plan, administer, and evaluate nursing care to patients in /health care center. This course consists of twenty eight hours in skills lab class and 316 hours in the clinical setting.

NR 140 Maternity Nursing (2 units)
This course focuses on integration and application of the nursing process as it relates to the nursing care of children and their families. Emphasis is on the concepts and skills related to age-appropriate family centered care. Clinical experiences will provide opportunities for students to participate in therapeutic activities in a variety of pediatric setting.

NR150 Pediatric Nursing (3 units)
This course focuses on integration and application of the nursing process as it relates to the nursing care of children and their families. Emphasis is on the concepts and skills related to age-appropriate family centered care.

NR160 Mental Health (1 unit)
An exploration of the meaning of mental health. Students will learn how to gather and assess information relevant to the mental health status of clients. In addition, they will apply concepts of mental health and communication to patient care.

NR130 Leadership & Supervision (5 units)
This course is a class to educate the LVN students in the field of the difference between leadership and management as to purpose and function. Also it is to identify job opportunities for the future and to review knowledge and skills needed for working in this field.

NR131 Leadership & Supervision, Pediatric, Maternity and Mental Health – Clinical (8 units)
Clinical experiences will provide opportunities for students to participate in therapeutic activities in a variety of pediatric setting and mental health clinic. Observation of all clinical duties performed in the OB/GYN clinic.

NR170 Specialty (1 unit)
This course includes dying patient, hospice and rehabilitation nursing care. Students participate in nursing care for dying patients and rehabilitation patients.
